“Blister pack is a term for several types of pre-formed plastic packaging used for small consumer goods, foods, and for pharmaceuticals.” Everything from toys to electronics have been known to come in blister packs. According to answers.com, credit for the invention is given to Enock Ancker of Fort Bayard, New Mexico who invented the blister pack for pills on Feb 18, 1947.
The term “credit” for the invention is actually used loosely since opinions are mixed on blister packs. They are useful in so many ways, such as visual display of products and theft deterrence, but they are so difficult to open.
Blister packs are not necessarily the favorite packaging of environmentalists, either. Since they consist of either a mixture of heavy stock paper or boxboard or foil and a multitude of plastics, blister packs are not recyclable at most recycling centers without the commodities being separated; a very expensive venture.
